To the Temple Beth El Family:
It is with overwhelming shock and grief that I share with you very difficult news. Cantor Stephen Dubov passed away early Sunday morning from heart failure while visiting his family in Detroit.
This is a devastating loss to Cantor Dubov’s family and our community. Our hearts go out to his wife Christine, his children Aleksandra and Ariel, his parents Joan and David, his sister Linda Sommers and her family, as well as his brother Harvey Dubov and his family.
In just the few weeks of his tenure, Cantor Dubov quickly began to establish a special place in the heart of our congregation – initiating new ideas, reaching out to our community and, through his music, bringing a new dimension to our worship. His extraordinary talent, his passion for Judaism and the Jewish people, his engaging warmth, and his tremendous sense of humor captured the spirit of our congregation. His passing is a great loss for our congregation and the Jewish people.
A memorial service will take place Tuesday, August 8 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield, Michigan at 12:00 p.m. We will hold funeral services at Temple Beth El on Thursday, August 10 at 10:30 a.m. We will also commemorate Cantor Dubov at Shabbat services on Friday night August 11 at 7:30 p.m. We encourage you this week to visit the Starkoff Chapel, where you may remember Cantor Dubov and write a message to his family. More information will be forthcoming as to the family’s wishes for memorial contributions.
The congregation’s staff and lay leadership are working together to fill the absence left in our congregation, and we will keep you informed along the way.
Cantor Dubov shared with me last week how happy and excited he was to be at Temple Beth El. He loved our spirit, our warmth, our creativity, and our commitment to excellence in all that we do. In the aftermath of this terrible tragedy, it is vital that we summon all the energy, commitment, and vitality of this extraordinary community. Jewish tradition teaches us that it is the community’s responsibility to comfort those who mourn. As we all collectively mourn Cantor Dubov, so must we all come together not simply to comfort one another, but to rededicate ourselves to our congregation and all we stand for.
May God’s healing presence embrace the Dubov family as they mourn, and may our collective embrace of them and each other help us find the path to healing and comfort.
L’Shalom,
Daniel Levin,
Rabbi
